The City of Vancouver’s residential recycling collection transitioned to Multi-Material BC (MMBC) on October 3, 2016. Below are some answers to questions Vancouver residents might have about this transition.

What does this mean for you?

There are no changes to the types of materials collected as part of the residential recycling program and the majority of residents had no change to their recycling schedule. Residents that do not yet have segregated glass, currently being rolled out by the City of Vancouver, will have this added by MMBC between October and December, and a small number of households had a change to their recycling schedule. Please refer to the curbside recycling guide or multi-family recycling guide, or search your address above, to see if you had any schedule changes.

Was Vancouver already part of the MMBC program?

Yes. The City of Vancouver joined the MMBC program in May 2014, and – like many communities in the province – was receiving a financial incentive from MMBC to manage its own residential recycling collection. The City decided in November 2015 to transition recycling collection directly to MMBC, and this change took place October 3, 2016.

When did recycling collection transition to MMBC?

The transition of service from the City of Vancouver to MMBC happened on October 3, 2016.

Did my collection schedule change?

For the vast majority of curbside customers, collection schedules stayed the same. You were  notified, prior to the transition, if your schedule changed and you received a new recycling guide and calendar.

Multi-family buildings previously serviced by City of Vancouver collection crews may also see their schedules change. Building owners or manager were notified prior to the transition if this was the case.

Does MMBC directly provide recycling service to any other communities?

MMBC already provides direct service in many areas of the province including the Cities of Pitt Meadows, Langley, Coquitlam, Revelstoke, Prince George and Quesnel; the Village of Anmore; the University Endowment Lands; and Regional Districts of North Okanagan, Central Kootenay and Kootenay Boundary.

Who can I contact for more information about my recycling service?

If you have questions about your existing recycling collection, please contact the City of Vancouver up until the transition date of October 3, 2016 by calling 3-1-1. After that date, if you live in or manage a multi-family building with five or more units, where residents bring their recycling to carts a central location, please contact MMBC’s multi-family collection partner, Waste Management at 604-282-7961 (a small number of multi-family buildings will be serviced by Smithrite – please use the address search tool above to verify your collector) ; if you are a curbside customer (i.e. you bring your recycling individually to the curb using bins, bags or carts, including multi-family complexes with four or less units) please contact MMBC’s curbside collection partner, Smithrite Disposal Ltd at 604-282-7966.

If you are a multi-family building owner, manager or strata, you should have received a letter from the City of Vancouver detailing changes to your recycling service.
